Our Latest Trips

We had the opportunity to visit  the Los Angeles area.  We want to share with you some of the architectural highlights of our trip.  Please scroll down and enjoy our picture album.

Santa Anita and Gus Weidner, Pasadena, California

In 1928 my father, August Weidner, migrated from Germany to Southern California.   He was an artesian who was prolific in hand wrought iron.  He spoke little English...he was hired by a German speaking  gentlemen by the name of Mr. Joe Mohl who received a contract to do the iron work in the front of the famous race tract, Santa Anita.  Dad worked on this project for quite sometime.  It was a joy to know this wonderful Art Deco iron work has been preserved.  You can see all of Santa Anita in the movie Seabiscut.

Bob's Big Boy - Toluca Lake, California

During our youth, in the 1950s, Bob's Big Boy was the restaurant of choice...especially Friday and Saturday nights after the local high school football game (go North Hollywood High Huskies)...before you got your car in the line for outside service...it wasn't cool to eat inside...you "dragged" the alley a couple of times so all your friends could see you.  Los Angeles has designated this Bob's as historical spot.  Yes, the hamburgers taste the same.

The Chinese Theater & Roosevelt Hotel - Hollywood

A Chinese dragon guards this old Art Deco theater.

All of the walls in the outside courtyard have beautiful decor.

Our favorite actress...Marilyn Monroe's foot and hand prints.

The ceiling of the newly resorted Roosevelt Hotel across the street from the Chinese Theatre.  It has a wonderful museum of early Hollywood history and memorabilia.

The Getty Museum - Los Angeles

No matter where you look...the view of the Getty or from the Getty is amazing.  The picture on the left of one of the buildings, you see, as you come up the hill on the tram.  Mr. Richard Meier, the noted architect, had a vision that has been executed for the pleasure of millions of people.  We have visited every major museum in the USA and this building not only houses a supreme collection but the "house" its self is a national treasure.

There is a short walk from the tram to the front entrance.

No matter where you turn you will find wonderful ponds and reflection pools.

Walking from one building to the next gives you time to reflect and enjoy the new view...it changes from building to building.

Just a small sample of the fine 17th century French furniture in the decorative arts collection.

The Reagan Library - Simi, California
The Reagan Library has the ambiance of the old California missions...fountain at the entrance and a lovely portico.  Standing at the door is President Reagan greeting all of his visitors.  This is a must see and a wonderful place to bring children.  Mrs. Reagan visits quite often and personally greets visitors.

Ferndale, California

If you are fan of Victorian homes and store fronts a visit to Ferndale is a must.  This small town outside of Eureka, California is a delight.  The whole town  has been preserved....from the city buildings, homes, stores and a interesting old cemetery.  There a bed and boards and a great hotel.  You can easily slip back in time.
