This is a piece of great history.  It was made during the Civil War and owned by the same Eastern family for three generations.  AT the turn of the century the family moved to the West.  When original owners  great-granddaughter's estate was liquated it was put up for sale.  It measures just under 9 inches long.

Lace & Tatting Tools

Here is an example of  old fashioned hand made lace using vintage lace bobbins.  We thank one of our special customers for sharing this with us.  Framed with the lace is a pair of ,circa 1700, wooden bobbins she purchased from us.  What a talent!

English Lace Making Bobbin c1875 Item # SEW-20406

We are pleased to have found this bone bobbin with the maker's name on the side.  The "end of day" beads are in very good condition...the center bead has applied glass...quite nice and unusual.   There is thread that the owner has left.  It measures 5 inches long.

The feel of this bobbin is quite nice indicating that many hours of use has worn it to a smooth patina.   The bobbin measures 5 inches long. One of square beads has a small chip.

I am sure that some darling young lady made this sweet needle case for her mother.  It is the type of work that was taught in sewing classes during the 1940s.  The outside is velvet the inside is flannel...please email us for a peek inside.  The buttonhole stitches and red bow finish it off nicely.  The item is in good condition.  The folded measure measurements are 3 by 4 inches.  It is in OK condition.

Bloods English Sewing Needles

The date on the front of this package is 1863...which is probably the date the Bloods company, of Redditch, England,  was established.  Our guess these date from about 1930.  The package measure 3 3/4 inches long and is 1 1/4 inches wide.

A favorite story, from my childhood (which is still going on) is the one about the Tortoise & The Hare...this little man has a green rhinestone eye, which he keeps on the road.  He is made out of plastic with a gold overlay.  He is 3 inches long.

Silver Chatelaine Pin Holder - Civil War Era

The during the 18 and 19th century the busy housewife wore a chatelaine that held all of her work tools.  This piece was designed to hold straight pins...it was probably among scissors, needle holder, thimble holder and other important sewing tools.  The piece is about 1 3/8 inches square.  The silver design is on both sides holds the "cushion."

Handmade Pin Cushion - c 1950

This is a copy of the type of pin cushions that were kept on dressers during Victorian times.  The ladies keep their hat pins as well as sewing pin at hand.  It is covered with a very nice hand crocheted dolly.  The cushion measures 11 inches long and is 3 1/2 inches wide.

This darling wooden shoe pin cushion was once a tourist item  from Belgium.  It has a screw eye in the "heel" so it could be hung.  (We think this was added after the purchase.) The paint is slightly worn, but this gives a sweet patina to the piece.  It  measures 4 1/2 inches long and 1 1/2 inch at the widest.

The pincushion comes from the area of Yugoslavia or Northern Greece.

Sailor's who spent many hours at sea would make little boxes and novelties for their sweethearts.  This box is a sewing box with its little build in pin cushions.  There are shells that are missing...but this piece just tells a story of love.  The box is paper lined.  It measures 7 1/2 by 4 1/2 by 2 1/2 inches.

It is our educated guess that this awl was probably made by a sailor for their handwork.  The bone is quite heavy and we lean towards feeling it is a bone from a Wale. It measures just a little over 3 inches long.
